Be verbs

You can just think of the be verb as playing the role of an equal "=" in a sentence.
Or it can be translated as "to be present."

Example He is 15years old
He is 15years old
[He] = [15 years old]

He is kind.
[He] = [kind].

For the past, use the past tense of the be verb.
e.g. He was a student.

Small stuff

. The mainstream theory interprets the "be" in the progressive or passive [be done] and the future tense [be going to] as an auxiliary verb rather than a verb,
which is also advantageous for grammar study.
(There is also a theory that interprets it as a verb, but it is confusing later.)
